Finally living the dream, the author spent hundreds of hours flying his 1940s era airplane while living right next to the runway, situated in the beautiful Star Valley of Wyoming. Unlike prior works where expansive regions were conquered for inclusion into a literary work, this project was an opportunity to capture weather, lighting, texture, and season encompassing an area that is overwhelmingly beautiful from the ground, yet overshadowed by better known national park neighbors to the north. As thunderstorms, fog, rain, wind, and snow came and went, the airplane often followed just behind these features, racing to mountain tops and down valleys, chasing after the beauty left behind in their wake, capturing scenes normally unavailable to all but the most intrepid of hikers and adventurers, or birds. Containing 98 images, “Flying the Star Valley” is a photographic atlas from above of the Star Valley, its three river basins, and the four mountain ranges that surround it.
